the story of Pongo
Pongo, a young badger, was found lying unconscious by the side of the road and taken to a nearby veterinary practice. After a few days of rest, he was ready to be released and so the North East Essex Badger Group were contacted. Unfortunately, the name and phone number of the person who had brought him in had been lost, and so no one knew exactly where to release him. An urgent appeal was made on the BBC Essex helpline asking for the finder to come forward. Luckily, that afternoon the call came and we had the information we needed. The location was identified, and after a quick search a badger path was found that led directly to a sett that we had records on, not very far away. When the cage was opened to release Pongo, the smell knocked us back - hence the name! At least we knew he had been eating well at the vets! Pongo knew instantly where he was, and off he trotted, back to his sett - one lucky little badger! |
